Why You Need a Strong WiFi Password

A weak WiFi password is one of the easiest ways for an outsider to reach every device on your network, from laptops and phones to smart cameras and thermostats. Once someone joins your WiFi, they can often see local network traffic, access shared files, or use your connection to hide their own activity.

A strong WiFi password should be long, unpredictable and built from a wide pool of characters. Length matters more than almost anything else: each extra random character roughly doubles the number of guesses an attacker needs to try.

How the Strength Score Works

This tool measures password strength using entropy, expressed in bits. Entropy is calculated as the password length multiplied by the base-2 logarithm of the character pool size. A password built from 16 random characters drawn from a 70-character set has roughly 98 bits of entropy, which is far beyond what current hardware can brute force in any realistic timeframe.

The estimated crack times shown are approximations. WPA2 and WPA3 use a slow key-derivation process, so realistic attacks are usually much closer to the "typical WPA2 crack rig" estimate than the theoretical fast offline figure, which assumes an unrealistically fast hash rate.
